“We’re proud to welcome our community in to see the incredible transformation of our school,” said Jason Calahan, Principal of Windy Hills Elementary. “These renovations are more than just updates—they’re an investment in our students, our staff, and the future of Windy Hills.”
The Windy Hills project is part of Kearney Public Schools’ continued investment in providing safe, innovative, and future-ready learning environments. Project improvements include a new secured entrance and administrative wing with a new reception area, office spaces, conference room, nurse’s office, and additional student support spaces. Additionally, new windows and a fire alarm and sprinkler system were installed, a new HVAC system was installed, electrical and mechanical systems were updated, classroom spaces were redesigned, and the building received new paint, finishes, and amenities.
The majority of the project was paid for utilizing QCPUF (Qualified Capital Purpose Undertaking Fund) dollars where construction enhancements were approved by bond attorneys reviewing the project and legal requirements. The district also utilized special building funds to pay for items not supported by the requirements of QCPUF funding.
“These upgrades are more than bricks and mortar—they reflect our commitment to supporting students with modern, engaging spaces where they can thrive,” said Jason Mundorf, Superintendent of Kearney Public Schools. “We are incredibly excited to welcome the students, staff and Windy Hills community back to their school and look forward to their enjoyment of this incredible renovation. We are also proud to acknowledge our local partners in BD Construction, Wilkins Architecture and Design, Morrissey Engineering, along with the many terrific local subcontractors for their fantastic work. Local expertise guided the project from conception to completion, with Kearney-based Wilkins ADP providing architectural design services and fellow Kearney firm BD Construction managing the renovation construction work. Once again, the project was completed on time and under budget which is a priority for our board members, administration, and taxpayers. We are incredibly blessed to have terrific schools in Kearney and we are very appreciative of the community’s support in making the new Windy Hills Elementary a reality!”
