LEXINGTON — The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office shared several reminders with parents about online safety as their children return to the classroom.

“As kids head back to school, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement—but don’t forget to protect what matters most: their privacy,” the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) stated.

Social media this time of year is often filled with well meaning photos of children about to embark on their first day of school.

Parents are reminded to avoid posting photos of their children that include their full name, school name or location, teacher’s name or classroom number and identifiable logos, uniforms or landmarks.

The reason being is that these small details, harmless on their own, can be put together by scammers or predators who are seeking to target a child or family, per the DCSO.

“Empower your kids with awareness and stay mindful of what you share. The world doesn’t need to know everything—just that your child is thriving,” the DCSO concluded.
