Overcast conditions over central Nebraska in early August, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
HASTINGS — If the last few days of August felt cooler than in recent years, that’s because it was the coolest finish to the month in 33 years.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, Aug. 23-31, the last nine days of the month, were the coolest since 1992 at both the Grand Island Central Reginal Airport and Hastings Municipal Airport.
In Grand Island, the overall temperature, an average of both daily highs and lows was 67.3 degrees. This ranked as the ninth coolest finish to August out of 129 years on record and was the coolest since 1992 averaged 65.0 degrees.
At the Hastings airport, the overall temperature during the nine days was 67.6 degrees. This was the 10th coolest finish out of 119 years on record. In 1992, the average was 65.8 degrees.
NWS Hastings notes the cool finish to August was driven more by the cool daytime temperatures than the cool nighttime lows, largely due to the fact that it was frequently cloudy.
This kept the daytime temperatures cooler and nighttime temperatures were warmer comparted to a weather pattern with clearer skies.
