GRAND ISLAND — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska is celebrating six months of renewed leadership under Executive Director Christine Haba, marking a period of growth, innovation, and deeper community connection for the organization.
Since stepping into her role in May, Haba and the Big Brothers Big Sisters team have guided the agency through several exciting milestones. Together, they introduced enhanced match-support services to provide wraparound resources for youth and families—ensuring that each mentoring relationship receives the attention and tools needed to thrive.
Through strengthened leadership and collective vision, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska was selected as a pilot agency for small-group mentoring through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Federation—broadening opportunities for young people to connect, learn, and grow together. The team also launched Bigs with Badges earlier this year, connecting local law enforcement and first responders with youth to strengthen relationships and trust across communities.
This year has also seen an increase in Big Couples—pairs who volunteer together to mentor a young person—reflecting a growing desire among local couples to invest in the next generation.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska continues to expand its reach through focused rural outreach efforts in Hall, Hamilton, Merrick, and Howard Counties, ensuring that children in smaller communities have the same access to mentoring and support as those in Grand Island.
These collective efforts have propelled the organization to a major achievement: 100 active matches between Bigs and Littles—the highest number in ten years.
“We’re celebrating more than numbers; we’re celebrating what can happen when a team pulls together,” said Executive Director Christine Haba. “Every person—staff, volunteers, and partners—has helped make this milestone possible. Each match represents hope, trust, and the belief that every child deserves someone in their corner.”
Board President Kathryn Vampola added, “Christine’s energy and vision have reinvigorated our mission, and the dedication of our entire team has made this progress possible. In just six months, they’ve strengthened programs, deepened community partnerships, and positioned
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska for long-term growth. We’re incredibly proud of what this team is achieving.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska continues to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth across the region.
