A ground blizzard in central Nebraska, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
HASTINGS — According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, central Nebraska will see its first shot of winter this weekend following Thanksgiving.
The best chance of snow, along with strong northwesterly winds will arrive late Friday night into Saturday. The combination of falling snow and winds could contribute to poor visibility for those traveling.
A cold front is expected to push through the area on late Friday, and bring a wind shift from the north. Precipitation may start as rain late Friday night but will quickly change over to snow as temperatures plummet early Saturday morning.
This combination of snow and possibly refreezing rain could lead to slick road surfaces on Saturday. Winds out of the northwest may also gust to 40 mph and lead to poor visibility with any falling snow.
“Snowfall amounts are expected to be relatively light for most of the area. Northeast Nebraska is most favored to see 2-3 inches, with amounts decreasing further southwest,” per NWS Hastings.
The cold front will suppress temperatures for the next several days after Saturday, with highs likely not getting above freezing, along with lows in the teens.
There are small chances for light snow on Sunday and Monday, but confidence is not high.
