HASTINGS —Ongoing sewer maintenance efforts in east central Hastings will move to Burlington Avenue during the week of Dec. 8, 2025 – depending on weather.
Contractor Johnson Service Company of Kearney is working to clean and inspect with cameras the sewer system in east central Hastings, which includes eight blocks of Burlington Avenue, as part of a larger project to video the City’s entire sewer system. The project is a proactive
approach to sewer maintenance.
Work on Burlington Avenue includes the blocks between 14th and Sixth streets. There may be temporary lane closures at the work areas. Because manholes are located on every lane over the course of that eight-block area, different lanes will be closed in different areas.
The City of Hastings Street Department will assist with traffic control.
Please proceed with caution when driving through the area.
The process takes two vehicles, working together about a block apart. One truck deploys high pressure water jet systems into the sewer to remove build up and clogs, while the other truck simultaneously films the sewer to determine if additional work is needed such as cutting tree roots or grinding concrete, or removing rust in the line.
These inspections will provide Hastings Utilities with high-definition video as well as reports to catch potential damage before it becomes a problem.
Johnson Service Company crews are scheduled to begin work on Burlington Avenue beginning Monday morning and is scheduled to last all week. The work is anticipated to begin around 8:30 a.m. to avoid the morning commute, with lunchtime breaks as well
