KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is proud to announce that Kyle Peters has been named the new head football coach (third in 52 years) at Kearney High School. Peters will assume the role immediately, replacing Brandon Cool.
Peters has served as an assistant coach in the Bearcats football program for the past 10 years, (five as defensive coordinator) playing a key role in player development, program continuity, and building strong relationships with student-athletes and families.
“Kyle has been an integral part of our football program for more than a decade,” said Mr. Jeff Ganz, Principal of Kearney High School. “His commitment to our students, understanding of our culture, and passion for Kearney High School make him a natural leader for this next chapter of Bearcat football.”
Dr. Jason Mundorf, Superintendent of Kearney Public Schools, added “Coach Peters has earned the endorsement of our players, his coaching colleagues, and many observers around the state through his talent, commitment, work ethic, and coaching acumen. I commend Mr. Hogue, Mr. Ganz, and the interview team for looking at a number of high quality candidates from around the state and beyond in this critically important hiring process. Replacing Coach Cool will be a tall task, but we are confident Coach Peters will meet that challenge.”
Ryan Hogue, Kearney High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal, emphasized the significance of the hire and Peters’ long-term commitment to the program.
“Coach Peters will become just the third head football coach at Kearney High School in the past 52 years, which speaks to the tradition and stability of our championship football program,” Hogue said. “His commitment, loyalty, and continued growth over the last 10 years (five of those as our defensive coordinator) have fully prepared him for this next challenge. Kyle understands our athletes, our expectations, and what it means to represent Kearney High School. His overall coaching experiences and strong relationships within our school and community will serve the Kearney High Athletic Department extremely well moving forward. The Bearcat football program is in great hands, and our community will see the impact of Coach Peters’ leadership immediately.”
Peters said he is honored to take on the head coaching role.
“Kearney has been home for me for the past 10 years,” Peters said. “I could not be more excited about this opportunity. I want to thank the athletes, past coaches, current coaches, and my family for all of their support. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and build on the high standards that have already been established. We will continue a program that KPS and the Kearney community take pride in, both on and off the field.”
