GRAND ISLAND – Two Grand Island women are facing theft charges after one woman would scan Kool-Aid packets rather than grocery cart items that were worth more than the Kool-Aid packets.
Sapphire Utley, 36, of 588 E. 18th St. is charged with felony theft by deception for incidents that occurred between Oct. 17 and Oct. 27. Keishawnda Medlock, 32, 0f 2301 W. Second St. Nov. 17 was charged with felony aiding and abetting theft by deception for incidents that occurred between Oct. 17 and Nov. 1.
According to police probable cause statements, Medlock was an employee at Super Saver North. A grocery store loss control specialist reported the thefts to police.
Utley would fill a shopping cart and proceed to checkout. Medlock then scanned Kool-Aid packets rather than the items in the grocery cart. Utley left the store without paying for the actual items in the shopping cart.
According to the probable cause statement for Utley, there were four incidents involving $2,568 in groceries.
According to the probable cause statement for Medlock, items valued at $3,511 were stolen,
Bond for Utley was set at $10,000. Her preliminary hearing will be at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8.
Bond for Medlock was set at $2,000. Her preliminary hearing will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 22.
