GRAND ISLAND – CHI Health St. Francis is closing its skilled nursing facility at 2116 W. Faidley Ave., effective March 10.

“This decision reflects broader changes in how skilled nursing care is delivered and the increasing shift away from hospital-based skilled nursing services across the country. Our priority is supporting our patients, families and staff through a thoughtful and well-planned transition,” said Steve Schieber, president of CHI Health St. Francis.

“Skilled nursing facilities, like the ones found in Grand Island and across the country, provide temporary care, including rehabilitation and 24/7 nursing oversight, typically following a hospital stay for illness or surgery. Skilled nursing facilities help patients regain independence before they return home or transition to a less intensive setting, such as assisted living or long-term nursing home. Unlike assisted living or long-term nursing homes that focus on chronic care, skilled nursing facilities focus on short-term recovery, with stays sometimes lasting only a few days,” said Anissa Paitz, external communications manager for CHI Health St. Francis.

According to the CHI Health St. Francis website, the skilled nursing facility provides an activities director seven days a week, 24-hour nursing care, transportation to and from appointments, home evaluation for safety and physical challenges, specialized medical care, a therapy gym, a home-like setting, on-site laundry, and private rooms with bath and shower.

The care team at the skilled nursing facility includes physicians, social workers, skilled rehabilitation nurses, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathologists, dietician, and certified nursing assistants, according to the website.

Paitz did not provide information about how many patient beds the skilled nursing facility has or the number of staff members affected.
