LINCOLN — Lincoln Police say an 88-year-old Avoca, Ne woman has died from injuries sustained in a pedestrian crash last Saturday morning near 14th and “G’ Streets. LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says Joan Meyer died early Wednesday morning.
“Our thoughts go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Thomas says. “Her injuries were initially thought to be non-life-threatening. The crash is now being investigated as a Motor Vehicle Homicide.”
Thomas says Meyer was on her way to the Walk For Life when she was struck. “The preliminary investigation determined 47-year-old Michael Hughes of Denton was driving his 2010 red Chevy Silverado pickup truck south on 14th Street and stopped at a stop sign just before the intersection,” Thomas says.
“He attempted to turn left onto G Street and struck Meyer who was crossing the road in the crosswalk. Officers nearby responded immediately and rendered first aid on scene. She was then taken to the hospital for a serious head injury.”
Meyer told police the sun was in his eyes and didn’t see Meyer as he was making the turn. Thomas says Hughes was initially cited for failure to yield the right of way, but that could change with the death of Meyer.
