Platte River, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
GRAND ISLAND — As temperatures remain above normal, the localized threat for ice jam flooding continues along parts of the Loup, North Loup and Platte rivers in central Nebraska.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, “Although not considered a significant concern, the threat for localized ice jam flooding cannot be ruled out for those portions of mainly the Loup, North Loup and Platte Rivers.”
Downstream of Grand Island, there is still some ice present and is gradually breaking up and moving downstream.
“Should any ice jams happen to develop, water levels could fluctuate as much as one to three feet in a short time, causing flooding with little, if any notice. This is especially true for known, ice jam prone locations,” per NWS Hastings.
If any ice jam flooding is observed along the Loup, North Loup or Platte Rivers, please report it immediately to the National Weather Service in Hastings,” per the NWS.
