GRAND ISLAND – Grand Island Board of Education members took turns asking the four Board of Education candidates 10 questions each during approximately two hours at the Feb. 12 Board meeting.

Throughout the interviews, Board members took notes and tabulated scores on interview rubrics provided by the Nebraska Association of School Boards.

The questions were:

  1. Please tell us a little about yourself. Where you grew up, where all you have attended school, occupation, family, how long you have lived in Grand Island, anything else you think we should know.
  2. What is your vision for education in the Grand Island Public Schools district?
  3. What qualities, skills, or experiences have prepared you to serve as a Board member?
  4. What role does policy play/have in the function of the board?
  5. What do you see as the Board’s roles and responsibilities?
  6. What are the current challenges facing education/school boards?
  7. How would you handle a request or concern, if approached, by an individual or special interest group?
  8. Will you support a Board decision you do not vote in favor of, why or why not?
  9. The Board of Education is generally considered a nonpartisan board. How will you ensure that your personal political views do not unduly influence your decision-making process on the board, especially when it comes to policies that impact students, teachers, and the community?
  10. This appointment is for the remainder of a term that expires on Dec. 31, 2026. Is your intent to run for election to a full term for this board seat in the 2026 election cycle?
