KEARNEY — In honor of both Buffalo County’s rich history and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, the Buffalo County Historical Society (BCHS) announces Buffalo County Voices, a countywide poetry contest open to writers of all ages.
As part of the broader America 250 Buffalo County Celebration, the contest invites original poems that reflect Buffalo County’s people, places, stories, and experiences within the larger American journey.
Poetry contest prizes are made possible utilizing the Ken Camann Memorial Fund.
Ken was a dedicated BCHS member known for his creative writing.
Who Can Participate
The contest is open to poets of all ages. Participants must submit to one of three age divisions based on their age as of June 29, 2026:
• Youth (ages 6–11)
• Middle & High School (ages 12-18)
• Adult (ages 19+)
Theme & Submissions
Poems must center on Buffalo County, Nebraska, and may also reflect on the United States’ 250th anniversary. Writers are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively. One original, unpublished poem per participant may be submitted electronically in any poetic style. Optional artwork or photography may accompany submissions for potential display or publication.
Judging will be blind and based on connection to theme, creativity, language and imagery, and overall impact.

• Submission Deadline: June 29, 2026
• Winners Announced: August 2, 2026, during the Wagon’s West Celebration
Selected poems may be featured in a commemorative publication and related promotional materials, with poets retaining full copyright to their work. Submit your entry at www.bchs.us/events
