KEARNEY — The City of Kearney mourns the loss and celebrates the remarkable life of Michael B. Yanney, a cherished son of Kearney, a visionary philanthropist, and a man whose generosity transformed our community in ways that will endure for generations.

Mr. Yanney’s extraordinary contribution to Kearney’s quality of life is most profoundly embodied in Yanney Heritage Park. What began in January of 1998 as a conversation between Michael and city park officials grew into a shared dream by converting an 80-acre cornfield into a place of beauty, recreation, and community connection for everyone. It was his deep love for Kearney and strong sense of civic responsibility that inspired him to gift the land in honor of his parents, E.K. and Mary Yanney, setting in motion one of the most transformative community projects in our city’s history.

Under Yanney’s leadership and through the work of the Yanney Heritage Park Foundation, a donor-driven vision took root and flourished. Each element of the park — from the winding walking trails and tranquil lake, to the 80-foot Observation Tower, gardens, playgrounds, splash pads, amphitheater, and more — was developed with purpose and passion so that families of all ages could gather, explore, and build lifelong memories.

Yanney’s generosity didn’t stop with the original gift. Over decades, he and the Foundation facilitated the thoughtful development of the park with private donations, community match grants, and strong stewardship, ensuring that every component would enrich lives and remain sustainable for future generations. In 2025, the final parcels of the park were formally donated to the City, completing the promise that this cherished place would truly belong to the people it was created to serve.

“Michael Yanney’s vision forever changed the landscape of our community,” said City Manager Brenda Jensen. “His generosity created a place where families gather, friendships are formed, and memories are made. Yanney Heritage Park stands as a testament to his belief in Kearney and in the power of investing in future generations. We are profoundly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.”

Michael Yanney’s legacy is not only etched into the landscape of our city — it is evident each time a child plays in the shade of a tree, a couple walks along the lakeside at sunset, or neighbors come together for a concert or festival. Yanney Heritage Park stands as a shining testament to his belief in community, his generosity of spirit, and his hope for a brighter future for all who call Kearney home.

Yanney was also deeply patriotic and carried a profound love for his country. In tribute to that spirit, the City will illuminate the observation tower at Yanney Heritage Park in red, white, and blue. This gesture reflects not only his patriotism, but also the pride he had in serving and strengthening his community. As the tower shines in those colors, it will stand as a visible symbol of gratitude for a man whose generosity and love of our country helped shape the heart of Kearney.

On behalf of the City of Kearney, we extend our deepest sympathy to Michael’s family and loved ones. We are forever grateful for his vision, his leadership, and the gift he gave, not just of land, but of joy, connection, and shared experience. His legacy lives on in every smile, every sunset, and every path walked within this beloved park.
