Strong winds and dry conditions have helped spread a number of grass fires in rural Lancaster County Thursday afternoon.   The first fire was reported in the area of S.W. 112th and W. Pioneers.  Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputies says that fire is now contained, but residents are asked to avoid the area due to the smoke.

Firefighters were battling two fires  near Denton and another near Crete.  LSO says right now crews are working in the areas of:

  • SW 100th and W Martell
  • NW 140th and W Adams
  • SW 140th and W Rokeby
  • NW 126th and W Adams

LSO Public Information Officer Kelsey Cruz says evacuations are happening in the area of SW 100th and Wittstruck and SW 84th and Wittstruck,  The fire path is blowing southwest to northeast. “We are asking residents to please clear the area so we can ensure firefighters and crews can access the area, Cruz says.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9:00 tonight.  Winds could gust to near 50 miles per hours, making fire containment difficult.
