GRAND ISLAND – The Grand Island Utilities Department is excited to announce the next step in developing a Regional Public Power Workforce Training Facility in Grand Island, which is a collaborative effort designed to strengthen workforce development for Nebraska’s public power utilities.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) and municipal utilities from across the region. Land for the training site has already been secured and a multi-utility steering committee is actively guiding the development of the facility.
The new training yard will serve as a hands-on learning environment for municipal utility workers, providing space for field-based instruction, equipment training and safety exercises that reflect real-world operating conditions.
The facility will support workforce development efforts for municipal utilities throughout the region by helping train the next generation of lineworkers and utility professionals while also providing continuing education opportunities for experienced crews. As part of the effort, Grand Island will also host the inaugural Heartland Municipal Lineworkers Conference from September 29 – October 1.
The three-day conference will bring together lineworkers for hands-on field instruction, skill development, equipment demonstrations and peer networking. Training activities for the conference will take place at the new Municipal Utility Training Site in Grand Island.
City officials say the conference represents an important step in building long-term collaboration between public power communities while strengthening the workforce responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure.
Additional details about the training facility and the Heartland Municipal Lineworkers Conference will be announced as planning continues throughout 2026.
