KEARNEY — A Red Flag Warning and a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for parts of central Nebraska west of Highway 183 for the afternoon hours of Tuesday, March 17.
The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued the warning and watch for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Dry winds are expected out of the west at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 18 to 20 percent.
The Red Flag Warning has been issued Dawson, Gosper and Custer and counties to the west. The Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Valley, Sherman, Buffalo, Phelps, Kearney, Furnas, Harlan and Franklin.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Any fire that develops will spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
