ELM CREEK — Members of the Kearney and Elm Creek fire departments responded to a small grass fire on Daykin Road amid a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather during the afternoon of Saturday, March 21.

Around 5:30 p.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department and Elm Creek Fire Department were dispatched to Daykin Road, south of Highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for the report of a small grass fire occurring in a field.

The fire burned around 100 square feet of ground while grass rigs extinguished the flames. Crews staged from an area on Daykin Road, just north of the fire.

The entire state of Nebraska was under a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions until 4 a.m. on Sunday, March 22. Temperatures were also record breaking on Saturday, with a high of 96 degrees being reported in Kearney at the time of the fire.
