GRAND ISLAND — The Kearney Catholic girls and the Northwest boys emerged as winners Tuesday in a high school soccer doubleheader at Viking Field.

In the girls match, the Stars (2-0) posted their second consecutive shutout to open the season as Pfeiffer Adkisson made six saves to keep Northwest off the scoreboard. Emily Nelson scored the lone goal, converting on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute for Kearney Catholic, which opened the season with a 4-0 victory over York.

Northwest dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The Vikings fell in their season opener 1-0 to Norris.

In the boys matchup, Xavier Corona recorded a hat trick to lead Northwest to a 4-1 victory.

Corona scored his first goal less than six minutes into the match. Keith DeLaet added another score in the 15th minute to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead before Corona struck again for a goal in the 26th minute for a 3-0 advantage.

Kearney Catholic (1-3) got its lone goal with 12:15 left in the first half as Easton Malleck scored on a breakaway.

However, Corona tallied his third goal in the 49th minute on a free kick to provide the final margin for the Vikings (1-1).
