GRAND ISLAND — Grand Island and Hastings set daily temperature records for March 25, only four days after a heat wave cause the highest temperatures seen in central Nebraska this early in the year.

The historic heat wave on March 21 broke records that went back 130 years.

On March 21, Grand Island recorded a high temperature of 98 degrees, previously 90-degree temperatures had occurred nine times in, most recently as March 16, 2015.

Hastings temperature on Saturday topped out at 97 degrees, the previous record for the date was 87 and set in 1910.

Temperature records date back to 1907 in Hastings.

The high temperatures were due to a strong upper-level ridge of high pressure in the western United States, a pattern that has persisted throughout the winter and early spring. This has contributed to the ongoing drought conditions across the state and region.
