LINCOLN — Fans will soon storm Memorial Stadium to watch the Huskers play their Spring Game. As they make their travel plans, the Nebraska State Patrol urges drivers to prepare for heavy traffic both to and from the game.

“As always, the Husker Spring Game is a great opportunity for fans to come together and see this year’s team,” said Colonel Bryan D. Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It’s also a chance for fans who may not regularly attend games to experience Memorial Stadium. We encourage everyone to drive safely and be prepared for heavier traffic than usual on Husker Gameday. Please allow extra travel time, reduce speed in congested areas, stay alert for pedestrians and event staff, avoid distractions, and always designate a sober driver if alcohol is involved.”

Due to the expected increase in traffic volume, NSP wants to remind drivers of the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s recommended routes. When coming to the game:

– Drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the west should take Exit 397 (south U.S. Highway 77 (US-77)) to Rosa Parks Way into downtown Lincoln.
– Drivers arriving in Lincoln on I-80 from the east should take Exit 401 to south Interstate 180 (I-180) into downtown Lincoln.
– Plan ahead for construction on Interstate 80 (I-80), west of Lincoln from the Pleasant Dale exit (Exit 388) to Exit 399. Two lanes in each direction will be open but expect congested traffic and delays.

When leaving the game:

– Drivers should avoid Exit 409 between Lincoln and Waverly as it may be closed due to safety concerns as I-80 traffic builds. This may significantly increase traffic on U.S. Highway 6. Leaving downtown Lincoln immediately after the game can put you in heavy traffic. Spending extra time in Lincoln immediately following the game will allow traffic to ease and help ensure a smoother ride home.

To ensure traffic flows smoothly before and after the game, the NSP Airwing will be providing support to troopers and other local law enforcement on the ground. If you observe a reckless driver or anyone in need of non-emergency roadside assistance can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55.
