KEARNEY — The Two Rivers Public Health Department (TRPHD) has confirmed that a bat collected within the district has tested positive for rabies. The bat was reported following direct contact with individuals.

Those involved have been notified, and appropriate follow-up, including medical consultation, is underway.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Rabies is transmitted between humans and animals through exposure to saliva and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. However, prompt medical evaluation and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following a potential exposure are highly effective in preventing illness.

Bats are the most commonly reported source of rabies exposure in Nebraska and across the United States. Bat bites can be small and difficult to detect. Any direct contact with a bat should be taken seriously.

TRPHD urges residents to avoid contact with stray and wild animals and to take immediate action by calling our public health nurses if exposure is suspected.

Prevention Tips
• Never handle bats or other wild animals, even if they appear sick or injured.
• Bat-proof your home by sealing openings and ensuring window screens are intact.
• Vaccinate pets regularly against rabies.
• Avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals.
