KEARNEY — The Buffalo County Historical Society (BCHS) invites the public to a Fabulous Friday presentation featuring Dr. Nathan Tye, associate professor of history at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK).
Dr. Tye’s talk, “They Held the Laboring Oars: The Frank Family’s Civil War,” explores the powerful role the Frank family played during one of the most defining periods in American history.
Best known locally for building the iconic George W. Frank Mansion in Kearney, the Frank family’s story reaches far beyond architecture. Prior to their move to Nebraska, the Frank family was deeply engaged in the abolitionist movement, actively opposing slavery and supporting the Union cause during the Civil War.
Drawing from original research, Dr. Tye highlights how members of the Frank family—particularly Congressman Augustus Frank—contributed to the war effort and championed the abolition of slavery. Their commitment extended to political action, including strong support for President Abraham Lincoln and the passage of the 13th Amendment.
The presentation offers insight into the Frank family’s personal connections to the Civil War and their enduring dedication to justice and equality. By examining their actions and values, Dr. Tye provides a richer understanding of the individuals behind the historic G.W. Frank Museum of History & Culture and their lasting impact on both local and national history.
Nathan Tye is an associate professor of history at UNK. Tye was born and raised in Kearney, Nebraska. He holds a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Tye specializes in Nebraska History, the history of the American West and Midwest, Labor History, Gender and Sexuality History, as well as Digital and Public History.
Q&A session will follow.
Please join us at the Trails & Rails Museum at 2:00pm on Friday, April 10th at 710 W. 11th St., Kearney, for this free event.
