HASTINGS COLLEGE PLAYS FOR GPAC TITLE FOR FIRST TIME:
The Hastings College Men’s Basketball team aims to continue their historic run, taking aim at their first GPAC Final in school history tonight hosting Morningside.
Tip-off is set for 7 PM for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament title from Lynn Farrell Arena.
After claiming a share of the GPAC regular-season title a few weeks ago, the Broncos dispatched Briar Cliff in the quarterfinal before earning a barn-burner win over Concordia on Saturday night.
Hastings College is led by Reggie Thomas, an Omaha Westside grad, who shattered the single season scoring record set nearly 60 years ago. The Mustangs and Broncos have split their season series so far, as the home team has taken each game, including an 85-83 Morningside win in Sioux City, Iowa on Feb. 10.
HUSKER WRESTLING CLAIMS EIGHT IN TOP FIVE PRELIM SEEDS:
Nine Nebraska wrestlers received top 10 spots in the preliminary seeding for this weekend’s 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, the Big Ten conference announced Monday evening.
The two-day championship event is set to begin Saturday, March 9 in College Park, Md., and will be carried on the Big Ten Network.
Pre-seeds are determined by a vote from conference coaches as they rank 14 wrestlers in all 10 weight classes. Additionally, Nebraska received two top two pre-seeds.
KHS ALUM NAGATANI CLAIMS NJCAA NATIONAL TITLE:
A Kearney Bearcat wrestling alum earned another lofty accolade in her career, as Iowa Western’s Flavia Nagatani claimed the 116 pound national championship over the weekend.
Nagatani won in a 12-1 decision in the NJCAA Championships on Saturday in the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.
The Kearney High School graduate from 2022 earned her first national championship honor after falling in the national championship match a year prior.
Nagatani was a two time girls state champion during her high school tenure.
POTTS EARNS EIGHTH CONFERENCE HONOR:
Natalie Potts brought home her eighth Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award of the 2023-24 season, when the conference announced its honors on Monday, March 4.
Potts closed out the regular season with 14 points, five rebounds, and a career-high-tying four assists at Illinois on Sunday.
She improved her season scoring average to 10.5 points and a Big Ten freshman-best 5.4 rebounds.
ROHR STEPS DOWN AT AMHERST:
Amherst girls basketball coach Brandon Rohr is stepping from that position.
Rohr made that announcement on social media on Monday stating he wanted to have more time for his family and his business. Rohr has led the Amherst program the last four seasons compiling a 64-34 record.
This past winter the Broncos made a late run and finished as the District runner up going 16-8. Before coaching at Amherst, Rohr had been an assistant coach with the UNK Women’s basketball program.
EAGLES CENTER KELCE RETIRES; JURGENS LIKELY REPLACEMENT:
The 36-year-old Jason Kelce officially called it quits Monday at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex, ending a 13-year career spent entirely with Philadelphia in which he became not only one of the great centers of his era who played a key role in the franchise’s lone Super Bowl championship but a beloved Philly personality and popular podcast host.
Kelce was a sixth-round pick out of Cincinnati in the 2011 draft. The burly, bushy-haired and bearded Kelce has been a stalwart of the offensive line since he was drafted and as an Iron Man after he missed most of the 2012 season with a partially torn MCL and torn ACL.
Kelce ended his career by making 156 straight starts, and he earned six All-Pro Team selections.
Kelce earned the first Super Bowl for Philadelphia, winning the title in 2018 over the New England Patriots.
Former Nebraska center Cam Jurgens has been Kelce’s primary backup since being drafted in 2022. Jurgens played significantly the past year at right guard for the Eagles due to injuries.
BRONCOS INFORM WILSON OF RELEASE WHEN LEAGUE YEAR BEGINS:
Two years ago, Russell Wilson exuberantly declared he intended to play a dozen years in Denver and double the trio of Lombardi Trophies in the Broncos’ lobby.
Acquiring Wilson turned out to be the biggest miscalculation in franchise history. He won just 11 of his 30 starts and witnessed both the coaching and quarterback carousels continue to churn in Denver, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016.
On Monday, the Broncos informed Wilson they’d release him next week when the new league year begins.
The Broncos still owe Wilson his $39 million salary for 2024 minus whatever he’d sign for with another team, which would likely be the veteran’s minimum salary of $1.21 million.
