HUSKER BASKETBALL SEES TWO MEN’S PLAYERS ENTER PORTAL; STEWART ENTERS FOR WOMEN:

Three players entered the transfer portal in total from Nebraska basketball rosters yesterday, as both teams had their respective seasons come to an end over the past weekend in the NCAA Tournament.

The Husker Men lost Eli Rice and Ramel Lloyd Jr. to the portal Monday, as Rice showed promise his freshman season hitting three point shots off the bench against Kansas State and Michigan State. Rice suffered a high-ankle sprain in January that kept him off the floor the remainder of the year.

Rice finished the year averaging 4.2 points and 1.6 assists with a 41.3 percent shooting percentage.

Lloyd Jr. also entered the portal after two seasons with the Big Red but not appearing in any contests. Lloyd averaged 5.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, ranking second in rebounding and third in both assists and steals while posting a team-best 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio during a pre-season Spain exhibition.

Finally for the Women’s squad, forward Annika Stewart will enter the transfer portal after four seasons with the Huskers.

The 6-foot-3 junior came to Nebraska in 2020, and played all 26 games as a true freshman. She appeared in 27 games in 2021-22 and played in all 33 games in 2022-23 totaling 111 contests over four years.

This past season, Stewart came on strong down the stretch. She scored 12 points over three games at the Big Ten Tournament, and made two 3-pointers in the Huskers’ season-ending loss to Oregon State on Sunday.

CREIGHTON WOMEN FALL TO UCLA, ENDS SEASON IN ROUND OF 32:

Despite 52 combined points from seniors Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek, the Creighton women’s basketball season came to an end on Monday, March 25 as the Bluejays fell to No. 6 UCLA, 67-63 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, UCLA (27-6) advances to next Saturday’s Regional semifinals in Albany against LSU.

The Bluejays end their season at 26-6 overall, including a 15-3 Big East record.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL HEADS TO LITTLE APPLE FOR MATCH UP WITH K-STATE:
A matchup of fringe Top-25 teams meet up tonight in Manhattan, Kansas as the Nebraska Baseball team aims to take down No. 23 Kansas State.

Pregame coverage on KGFW begins at 5:30 PM tonight with the first pitch set just after 6 PM.

Will Walsh will earn the start tonight for the Big Red, beginning the year with a 2-0 record and a 4.12 ERA.

Through 290 all-time meetings, the Huskers hold a 173-117 advantage over the Wildcats in the all-time series. Nebraska and K-State meet in a midweek matchup for the third consecutive season after the two teams met on the diamond for one game in Manhattan in 2023.

The Huskers have won the last two games over the Wildcats, including a 6-1 victory over K-State in Manhattan last season.

Under Head Coach Will Bolt, the Huskers have knocked off a Top 25 foe in every season, excluding the 2022 campaign where the Big Red went 0-3 vs. ranked opponents.

NFL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES BAN OF “HIP-DROP” TACKLE:

The NFL is eliminating the hip-drop tackle.

NFL team owners on Monday unanimously approved a rule that bans players from using a swivel technique to tackle an opponent.

A violation will result in a 15-yard penalty and could ultimately result in fines for players.

NFL executive Jeff Miller said the hip-drop tackle was used 230 times last season and resulted in 15 players missing time with injuries. The NFL Players Association has adamantly opposed the rule.

OHTANI CLAIMS INNOCENCE IN GAMBLING DEBTS:
Shohei Ohtani said Monday he never bet on sports or knowingly paid any gambling debts accumulated by his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

Instead, the Los Angeles Dodgers star claims his close friend lied to him for years and stole millions from the two-time MVP.

Ohtani gave his version of events during a news conference at Dodger Stadium, five days after Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers following reports from the Los Angeles Times and ESPN about his alleged ties to an illegal bookmaker and debts well over $1 million.

Ohtani left the Los Angeles Angels in December to sign a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers. Ohtani and Mizuhara had been daily companions from Ohtani joining the Angels in 2018 until last week, when Mizuhara’s gambling became public.
