HASTINGS — Temperature records in Grand Island were broken over the weekend and they continued to tumble across central Nebraska on Monday.
The Grand Island Central Nebraska Regional Airport hit 106 degrees on Aug. 21, which broke the record for the date. The former record was 105 degrees which had been set in 1929, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.
The airport also saw the warmest low temperature tied when it hit 76 degrees, matching the 1968 record.
The Hastings Municipal Airport recorded 104 degrees as the high temperature on Monday, which breaks the old record, 101 degrees, set in 1910, 1918 and 1943.
Lows during the morning only dropped down to 77 degrees in Hastings, which broke the existing warmest low record. The former record was 75 degrees, set in 1968.
NWS Hastings noted that the upper-level ridge of high pressure that has been dominating much of the continental United States is, “as strong as they come, especially by mid to late August standards.”
An Excessive Heat Warning or a Heat Advisory is in effect for the whole area today through Wednesday evening. An Excessive Heat Warning is also in effect through Thursday evening for north central Kansas and portions of south-central Nebraska, NWS Hastings noted.
A cold front will move through the area Thursday night into Friday bringing rain and storm chances beginning Thursday night.
“High temperatures during the weekend will be in the 80s across south central and central Nebraska and in the 80s,” per NWS Hastings.
