GRAND ISLAND — In the Nebraska Legislature’s District 35 race it was a narrow contest with Dan Quick narrowly beating incumbent Ray Aguilar, but both will advance.

Primary election results determine the top two candidates who will advance to the November general election for district seats.

The results of the election on Tuesday, May 14 included Dan Quick capturing 1,659 votes or 51.3 percent, Ray Aguilar received 1,575 or 48.7 percent.

Quick previously represented the district, being elected in 2017 and serving until 2020. While in office, he served on the Banking, Commerce, and Insurance, General Affairs, Natural Resources, and Urban Affairs committees.

Aguilar was elected to the seat in 2020, running against Quick. He is seeking is fourth full term in the Legislature. He was appointed in June 1999 to replace Chris Peterson. Aguilar was also elected in 2000 and 2004.

Quick said he has been canvasing the district and has been to 6,000 doors meeting with residents. He said he has heard often about property tax valuations and that this will need to be addressed in the legislature.

Speaking to his background, Quick said he and his wife have resided in Grand Island since 1980, he said he worked at the Grand Island Power Plant for 28 years.

He also served as President and Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1597 and as President of the Nebraska State Utility Workers Conference.
