Hometown Hero Banner in Grand Island, (Carol Bryant, Central Nebraska Today)
GRAND ISLAND — Workers from Messersmith Electric began hanging banners for the Hometown Heroes program on May 22 along Capital Avenue.
The banners will be hung from the north Dairy Queen on Capital Avenue to North Locust Street on light poles on both sides of the street.
The banners were unveiled in a ceremony May 21 at Grand Island Senior High School.
A local group that is providing the banners appeared before the Grand Island City Council in April to get permission to hang the banners on light poles.
The program promotes American patriotism and honors U.S. military veterans and active duty service members of the Grand Island community. The committee works to display banners of eligible U.S. military veterans and active duty service members of the Grand Island community on light poles in the city of Grand Island.
There are 51 banners.
Each banner has a photo of the person in uniform, the name of the war or other incident in which the person served, and the branch of service in which the person served.
The local Hometown Heroes group has a Facebook page called Grand Island Hometown Heroes.
