GRAND ISLAND — The paving improvement project on Custer Avenue will continue on May 28.

The southbound lane of Custer Avenue from Capital Avenue to State Street will be closed starting Tuesday, May 28. The northbound lane will remain open through the project corridor for access to adjacent properties.

A detour route will be provided on State Street, Webb Road and Capital Avenue to reduce traffic through the construction zone. Custer Avenue intersections at Capital Avenue and State Street will remain open to east/west traffic for this phase of the project, but no parking will be allowed on Custer Avenue through the construction zone. This phase of the project is expected to last until July 2024.

The Custer Avenue project includes reconstruction from Capital Avenue to State Street. The project includes reconstruction of the center 40 feet of the concrete roadway. A 30-inch curb and gutter section will remain on both the east and west side. Sidewalk and driveways will also remain in place. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be replaced at select locations.

The project is focusing on pavement reconstruction only. Improvements to the underground utilities or storm sewer are not anticipated. On November 21, 2023, the Grand Island City Council awarded the construction contract of the project to CL Construction, LLC of Wahoo, Nebraska for $1,289,532.80.
