GRAND ISLAND — Saybel Raez Almaguer earned a rare opportunity – to be the mayor of Grand Island…with supervision of course.

Almaguer wrote the winning essay in the first-ever “Mayor For a Day” Essay Contest. The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the City of Grand Island teamed up for the effort, tasking local sixth grade students to write essays about what they’d like to see happen in Grand Island by the time they graduate in 2030.

Along with a $100 cash prize from the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Almaguer’s winning essay also earned him a day with Mayor Roger Steele. The two toured Grand Island Fire Station 1, the Platte Generating Station of Grand Island Utilities and the Grand Island Police Department.

Almaguer received a front row seat to how the City of Grand Island operates, while getting a glimpse of all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make life easy for residents. From taking a spin around Fonner Park in a fire truck to wearing police tactical gear, the youngster made some memories that should stick with him for years to come!
