GRAND ISLAND — On July 20 at Peace Lutheran Church at 1710 North Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Arc of Central Nebraska will be holding a Disability Pride Celebration.

We will have food trucks, Special Scoops ice cream truck, free hotdogs, and entertainment. The entertainment will include karaoke, bingo, and a talent show.

Each July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month to commemorate the signing of the ADA into Law. It honors the history, achievements, experiences and struggles of the disability community. We have several upcoming events that you can celebrate and enjoy some fun this summer.

In Nebraska, we began celebrating Disability Pride on the steps of the Capitol. We had speeches by people with disabilities and supporters. We then went into the Capitol and spoke with any Senators and their staff who were there.

In 2024 the theme for Disability Pride Month is “We Want a Life Like Yours”. The Arc of the United States National Council of Self-Advocates chose the theme to reflect the disability community’s dreams for life experiences that they are too often denied. There is also an official color for Disability Pride Month – Orange! The color symbolizes energy and positivity.

Because of misinformation and misunderstanding, people with disabilities are often not thought of as equals or valued members of society. Disability Pride matters. As long as people feel ashamed of who they are, they will never realize the true equality and freedom they deserve and can achieve.

The Americans with Disabilities Act, or the ADA, is the federal civil rights law that bans discrimination based on disability and requires public places to be accessible.

Passed on July 26, 1990, it guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in everyday activities. The ADA defines that a person with disability as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that causes a substantial limitation in a major life activity.

We would love to see you at our event on July 20th at Peace Lutheran Church at 1710 North Road from 10am to 2pm.
