GRAND ISLAND — A 17-year-old juvenile male was cited for felony flight to avoid arrest after they fled through Grand Island at a high rate of speed to avoid a traffic stop during the evening of Monday, July 15.
According to the Grand Island Police Department, an officer was running traffic near Capital Ave. and Taylor Ave. when he observed a white Chevrolet Tahoe traveling over the post 40 mph speed limit.
The Tahoe quickly turned onto Taylor Ave. and the officer moved to stop the vehicle. Before the lights could be activated, the vehicle drove at an “extremely” high rate of speed through a residential neighborhood to avoid being stopped, per the GIPD.
The officer noted people were outside doing yard work and other residential traffic that the driver of the Tahoe gave no regard to. The vehicle was observed driving through Grand Island at a high rate of speed even though no police were actively trying to stop the Tahoe.
A concerned citizen would make a report to the GIPD regarding the excessive speed of the Tahoe as it continued to drive near 13th St. and Custer Ave. They were able to provide a license plate, which officers used to contact the juvenile and his mother.
Per officers, the juvenile admitted to driving recklessly to avoid being stopped by the officer who observed him speeding.
The juvenile did not have a driver’s license and would be cited for speeding, felony flight to avoid citation or arrest and no driver’s license.
