GRAND ISLAND — Motorcyclist fled traffic stops in Grand Island and law enforcement was forced to discontinue the stops for public safety.
On Wednesday, July 24 at 9:09 p.m., officers with the Grand Island Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle on N. Cherokee and the driver would not stop and flee northbound.
The motorcycle was later located near Craig Dr. and North Rd. The driver would drive through several stop signs without stopping and would flee southbound on North Rd at a high rate of speed.
Officers would discontinue the traffic stop.
At 9:10 p.m. officers attempted to pull over a motorcyclist wearing a black ski mask and a white T-shirt who was traveling eastbound on W. Faidley Ave. from North Road.
As the officer attempted a traffic stop, the motorcycle maneuvered into the turning lane around a stopped vehicle and accelerated at a high rate of speed through the intersection while there was a red light for eastbound traffic.
At this point the officer had not activated their overhead lights.
The motorcycle continued to accelerate at a high rate of speed eastbound on W Faidley Ave
which was visually estimated to be traveling 55-mph in a 35-mph zone, according to the GIPD.
The motorcycle was not followed due to traffic conditions and fleeing multiple attempted traffic stops previously.
