KEARNEY — On Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at approximately 8 p.m., Kearney Police Department responded to East Lawn Trailer Court regarding a report of a 16-year-old male brandishing a handgun from a vehicle as he drove by two people standing outside their residence.
Preliminary investigation indicates a dark green Buick driven by a 16-year-old male drove by the residence of a 15-year-old male whose parents were standing outside.
The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle rolled down his window and brandished a handgun towards the 15-year old and his father after they chased after the vehicle on foot. Additional investigation has revealed the two teenage males have been involved in an ongoing disturbance where they had both been threatening each other with violence.
The Buick and the 16-year-old driver were located by Kearney Police Officers and a locked bag was observed inside the vehicle. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle and the locked bag. While carrying out the search warrant, Officers located a loaded .25 caliber handgun inside the bag along with suspected THC.
The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony 28-1205, Class 2 Felony; Unlawful Possession of a Handgun 28-1204, Class 1 Misdemeanor; Possession of a Defaced Firearm 28-127, Class 3 Felony; Minor Carrying a Concealed Weapon, 28-1202, Class 1 Misdemeanor; Terroristic Threats 28.311-01, Class 3A Felony.
Juvenile Probation Services were contacted and following an assessment, the 16-year-old juvenile was transported and lodged at Madison Correctional Facility.
The Buffalo County Attorney’s office and the Office of Juvenile Probation Services assisted with the investigation.
