GRAND ISLAND – A driver who was intoxicated in a Nov. 16, 2023, one-vehicle crash where one man was killed has reached a plea agreement in Hall County District Court.
Quentin Scroggin, 19, of 2011 W. State St. pleaded no contest Aug. 8 in Hall County District Court to felony motor vehicle homicide, misdemeanor first-offense driving under the influence, and misdemeanor willful reckless driving. In exchange, two felony counts of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury were dismissed.
Hall County District Judge Patrick Lee will sentence Scroggin at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
Brennan Villatoro died as a result of the crash.
According to a Hall County Sheriff’s Department arrest warrant, deputies responded to a fatality accident near Schauppsville Road and Wildwood Road at 1:39 a.m. Nov. 16. Quentin Scroggin was identified as the driver of a 2003 red Chevrolet Tahoe.
Scroggin “admitted to recklessly driving the Tahoe by driving over the speed limit on a gravel road and attempted to airborne the vehicle on the elevated intersection multiple times.” Scroggin “admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking marijuana before the accident.” He admitted to not wearing his seatbelt, and other passengers were also not wearing their seatbelts.
All passengers in the vehicle sustained injuries, the arrest warrant said. Two adult passengers were life-flighted due to serious bodily injuries sustained from the accident. One man was pronounced dead at the scene.
In an affidavit for a search warrant in the case, a deputy asked Scroggin what occurred that night. Scroggin told the deputy “that he had consumed two and a half beers, and they went for a drive.” Scroggin told the deputy that he was going 60 to 65 mph when “hit a bump and flew a little bit” at one intersection.
Scroggin decided to do it again at the next elevated intersection, and that’s when he lost control of the vehicle. Scroggin also told the deputy that he began smoking marijuana at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 as soon as he got off work.
