Hastings Police Department (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

The Hastings Police Department participated in the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s statewide “Make it Click” mobilization Nov. 23 thru Dec. 1.

The Department was awarded grant money for Officers to work overtime hours conducting traffic enforcement and subsequent seatbelt violation enforcement.

A pre-event survey indicated 75% of drivers in Hastings were using their seatbelts. The post-wave survey, conducted in the same location and same time of day, indicated an increase to 80% usage.

During the event, 35 hours of overtime were worked which resulted in 46 traffic stops. Of those 46 additional traffic stops, only 5 seatbelt violations were found. During these traffic stops, 2 drug related violations and 1 alcohol related violation were also discovered along with numerous other traffic violations.

These types of grants and mobilizations are proven to reduce traffic related fatalities. The Hastings Police Department would like to thank the Nebraska Department of Transportation for awarding funds to participate.

The Hastings Police Department reminds everyone traveling in a vehicle to wear their seatbelt.
