KEARNEY — The Kearney city council approved new parking rules for Younes Drive in anticipation of the Kearney SportsPlex opening this spring.

In anticipation of the Kearney SportsPlex opening this spring, city staff has reviewed parking options along Younes Drive.

“As Younes Drive provides the only ingress and egress into the SportsPlex parking lots, staff recommends no parking along the north side of Younes Drive from 11th Avenue to 16th Avenue,” per the City of Kearney, “The goal of prohibiting parking on the north side of the street is to lessen potential interference with pedestrian and vehicle sightlines.”

“Additionally, with the reconfiguration of the driving lanes on Talmadge Street and the anticipated future commercial development in the area parking will also be restricted along this major collector roadway,” per the City of Kearney.

City staff also recommended no permitted parking between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. for the parking lots located directly east and west of the SportsPlex.

“Due to the facility’s close proximity to Interstate 80, any closures may result in large semitrailers parking for extended periods of time. Should these semitrailers have the availability of the SportsPlex parking lots, this may result in conflicts with parking availability for SportsPlex patrons,” per the City of Kearney.

The city council approved the new parking rules during their consent agenda ordinances section.

City Manager Brenda Jensen told the council members that a soft opening for the SportsPlex will be held at the end of March, and will be opening the first week of April, with the first sporting event being hosted.
