KEARNEY — The City of Kearney entered a construction and maintenance agreement with Kearney Family YMCA regarding the Rochelle Morris Splash Pad that is currently under construction.

The agreement was part of the consent agenda that was approved during the Kearney city council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The City of Kearney was approached last summer about the possibility of assisting the YMCA
in constructing a splash pad on the YMCA campus.

“The YMCA had received a donation from a local donor and desired to have the City of Kearney collaborate on the project. As part of the arrangement, the splash pad would be open to the public and available seasonally, as other City of Kearney splash pad facilities,” the City of Kearney noted.

The City of Kearney Park’s Staff will assist with the seasonal maintenance and operation of the facility.

The Kearney Family YMCA announced in fall 2024 that the Rochelle Morris Splash Pad would be coming in 2025, thanks to a donation from the Morris family honoring Rochelle.

“Her legacy of kindness and compassion will live on through this beautiful splash pad, where families can come together, create memories, and enjoy joyful moments for years to come,” the YMCA stated.

Construction began in November 2024, and it is anticipated to open in June 2025, according to the Kearney Family YMCA. A ribbon cutting will be planned with the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Kearney Family YMCA noted they are excited to incorporate the splash pad as activity that the children in their child care program can be a part of.

It was noted that the splash pad will be open to the community and the future hours will be set at a future date.
