New low temperature record set for Feb. 13 in Hastings, (NWS Hastings, Courtesy)

HASTINGS — A new record low temperature was set in Hastings for Feb. 13, beating a previous record from a record cold outbreak four years ago.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, the Hastings Airport recorded a low temperature of -13 degrees on Feb. 13, which broke the previous record, -11, set on this date back in 2021.

For reference the average low temperature this time of year is 19 degrees. Temperature records in Hastings date back to 1907, per NWS Hastings.

Elsewhere, Jim Kelly Field Airport in Lexington dropped to -21, the coldest reading since the February 2021 cold outbreak. The Ord airport also recorded -20.

February 2021 North American cold wave was caused by a southern migration of the polar vortex. Temperatures fell as much as 25-50 degrees below average as far south as the Gulf coast.

There will be a gradual warm up through Friday back into the mid-30s, but this will be short lived as another cold front is set to pass through the region on Friday night.

The NWS Hastings is monitoring the potential for another round of dangerously cold temperatures next week.
