History has been made at Kearney High School as junior Carsyn McBride captured the school’s first-ever Class A State Girls Wrestling Championship. McBride dominated the 115-pound title match, defeating Milena Notaro of Lincoln East with a decisive 7-0 victory.
This historic win marks a significant milestone for Kearney High, as it comes in only the second year of the school’s girls wrestling program. McBride’s championship run concluded with an impressive 48-2 season record.
“Carsyn is the kind of athlete every coach hopes to have—determined, hardworking, and a true leader both on and off the mat,” said Kearney head coach Trey Schlender. “When we talk about setting a standard for our program or leading the way for others, Carsyn is doing it all. She’s not only made history for our program but has also become a role model for young girls in our community. Her dedication to the sport and support of our youth wrestling program show the kind of character she has. Carsyn is the one who started it all, and her legacy will inspire Bearcat wrestlers for years to come.”
Wrestling runs deep in the McBride family. Carsyn’s older brother, Gauge McBride, was named the 2020 Kearney Hub Wrestler of the Year. Growing up, Carsyn attended her brother’s meets, often wrestling with him and his friends, who encouraged her to pursue the sport.
“Carsyn’s achievement is history being made for a second-year varsity program and a proud moment for Kearney High School,” said Ryan Hogue, Kearney High School Athletic Director. “To win an individual state title in just the second year of our girl’s wrestling program speaks volumes about her talent, determination, and leadership. She has set the bar high and paved the way for future generations of Bearcat wrestlers. Carsyn’s impact will be felt for years to come, and we couldn’t be prouder of her accomplishment. Congratulations, Carsyn and GO BEARCATS!”
Kearney High School is in its second year of Girl’s Wrestling. KHS qualified three wrestlers in 2024 and eight wrestlers in 2025. This year, KHS was runner-up in the Heartland Athletic Conference and 3rd in Districts. At State, KHS had a 4th place medalist, Stella Harbols, and Carsyn McBride, the first-ever Nebraska State Champion.
“Girl’s wrestling is one of our fastest-growing sports at KHS,” said Schlender. “In 23-24, our first year, we started with 24 girl wrestlers. This year, KHS had 35. Currently, there are 70 girl wrestlers in our middle schools.”
Carsyn McBride’s historic championship sets a new standard for the Bearcat wrestling program, inspiring future generations of athletes and leaving a lasting legacy at Kearney High School.
