KEARNEY — Central Elementary’s Delilah Darr claimed the top honor at the Kearney Public Schools District Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the winning word: puncheon.
Delilah outlasted a competitive group of 110 talented spellers from across the district to take home the grand prize.
The spelling bee, held Feb. 25, 2025, at UNK, showcased the hard work and dedication of students who spent weeks preparing for the event. After the initial written round, 26 students advanced to the oral competition. Students dropped out spelling words like: aluminum, accommodations, feisty, delinquent, etc.
After several challenging rounds, Delilah demonstrated her impressive spelling skills and poise under pressure, ultimately securing the championship title.
“We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated in this year’s spelling bee,” said Jeff Schwartz, Director of Student Services for Kearney Public Schools. “Delilah’s achievement reflects not only her talent, but also the support and encouragement of her teachers and family. Events like this highlight the importance of academic excellence and celebrate the accomplishments of our young learners.”
The KPS District Spelling Bee continues to be a cherished tradition, celebrating students’ love for language, literacy, and learning.
Congratulations to Delilah Darr and all participants on their remarkable achievements.
