GRAND ISLAND — A man who was found with his pants halfway down and wandering in the street would be arrested on a drug offense during the afternoon of Wednesday, March 5.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers responded to the Casey’s location at 4th and Broadwell for the removal of the subject.

While responding, officers were notified that the person had left the property and was now in traffic with his pants halfway down. On scene, officers contacted the male who continued to wander in traffic and ignored the officers’ directions to stop and speak with them.

The male, later identified as David Benitez-Lopez, had to bee pulled out of the road to allow traffic to move.

Benitez-Lopez began to pull away from the officers and had to be taken to the ground in order to be secured in handcuffs. He continued to resist officers by placing his foot against the patrol car to prevent being seated in the car.

Later, while being booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections, Benitez-Lopez was observed by staff to have multiple blue bills concealed in his underwear.

Per the GIPD, Benitez-Lopez would collect several of the pills, put them in his mouth and begin chewing them.

Ten pills, later identified as a schedule four controlled substance – Clonazepam, were collected with another three pills rolling down a drain.

Clonazepam is prescribed to treat seizures, panic disorder, and anxiety.

Benitez-Lopez was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.
