HAYS, KANS. – Senior Hannah Mares scored via a corner kick to help Fort Hays State edge Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Friday night in Kansas. This was the non-league matchup of the two longtime rivals; the Tigers (4-0-1) will come to Cope Stadium on Sept. 15 for the official MIAA game. With time winding down, Hays was awarded a free kick with Lincoln freshman keeper Susie Bovaird recording a save as she poked the ball over the top of the goal. However, that led to a corner with Mares managing to find the back of the net thanks to a fortuitous bounce off several Tigers and Lopers.UNK got shots from sophomore Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) and Corynne Olsen (Lincoln SE) but they couldn’t get past the Hays defense. FHSU ended up with nine shots on goal led by Mares (five) and sophomore Britney Amerson (three). The Lopers (1-4-0) host Washburn Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Ichabods move to 4-1-0 on the fall with a 1-0 victory over Emporia State.
