Matt Fisher

GRAND ISLAND — After being appointed to the position on an interim basis in January, Grand Island Public Schools announced that they will move to make Matthew Fisher the full-time superintendent.

“Mr. Fisher has done an outstanding job leading Grand Island Public Schools through a time of transition,” the Grand Island school board stated, “We believe he has earned the trust of our staff, students, and families and has proven himself to be the right person for the job.”

“Because of our faith in him and how he has approached his work, we, as a Board, wanted to affirm his role with the district by removing the word “Interim” from his job title,” the board stated.

The board did note that an operational mistake was made in the process.

“At last evening’s Board meeting we reconvened after Executive Session and voted to approve dropping “Interim” from Mr. Fisher’s title. In retrospect we realized we did not have the appropriate Agenda nor Action Item clearly identified on the Board agenda. This is a misstep we take responsibility for,” the board stated.

The board will share more on the future procedural updates.

“In the meantime, we are grateful to have Mr. Matt Fisher leading our district and we look forward to seeing how his positive leadership betters our district,” the board stated.

“Having been a part of the Grand Island community for the past ten-and-a-half years has given me many opportunities to see all the outstanding work the Grand Island Public Schools District is doing.” Fisher said in January when he was appointed as interim, “I feel very honored to be able to assume a leadership role in helping to shape the great works the district will be doing as we move forward.”

Fisher had served as the Director of Public Finance at First National Capital Markets but was likely best known for his time serving as superintendent of Northwest Public Schools from 2012-2019.

Fischer’s experience in education goes deep, having entered the classroom in 1986 as the math and computer science teacher at Rock County High School.

During his 32-year career in education, Fisher has also served as Superintendent of Chase County Schools, Secondary Principal of Chase County High School, and Secondary Principal at Rock County High School.

Fisher earned an Education Specialist, Superintendent (EdS) degree from the University of Nebraska – Kearney.
