KEARNEY — Cloud cover, cooler temperatures and rain chances will make for a less than ideal Memorial Day weekend across central Nebraska.
For Friday, mostly cloudy skies will prevail throughout most of the afternoon hours and high temperatures will likely be in the mid-60s, which is 10 to 15 degrees below average for late May, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.
Thanks to the northwesterly flow aloft across the center of the country for much of the next week, additional weak disturbances will move across the region on a near daily basis.
The next disturbance will pass through this evening, sparking shower and thunderstorm activity over the high plains, which will likely clip areas southwest of the Tri-Cities tonight.
“As this next disturbance passes by, clouds will linger through the remainder of the weekend, with additional chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms across the region,” per NWS Hastings.
“While thunderstorms cannot be completely ruled out, the general lack of instability will likely limit thunderstorm activity and the severe weather potential beyond tonight looks low,” NWS Hastings stated.
The coolest day of the period will be Monday when high temperatures will struggle to climb out of the 50s, with a modest warm-up coming by the end of the next week.
“While the entire week will not be wet, period chances for mainly showers and a few thunderstorms can be expected in the upper-level flow pattern with a ridge of high pressure eventually nudging in
across the plains late in the period bringing warmer and drier weather the following weekend,” per NWS Hastings.
Day by day, Saturday will see a 40 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 64. Winds will be out of the east at 10 to 15 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph.

For Memorial Day, there are scattered chances for showers throughout the entire day. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 58 degrees.
