After severe weather delayed kickoff between Kearney Catholic and Amherst to Friday, the Stars prevailed in part to improve to 4-1 on the year with a 16-0 shutout of the Broncos on the road.

The first quarter was primarily a defensive battle, as Kearney Catholics first drive ended with an interception, and every drive would end in the first quarter punting. The Stars weren’t helped with multiple holding penalties.

The first scoring came via defense, but in untraditional fashion. After a Kearney Catholic punt that pinned Amherst deep in their own territiory, the Broncos were called for intentional grounding in their own endzone.

Both teams would trade interceptions after the safety. Tajye Hedwiger would grab the second Amherst takeaway of the afternoon, but Jacob Lowe would grab an interception of his own. The Stars would take the ball down to the final seconds, but would be stuffed on fourth down to end the half.

The Stars would take care of business in the second half. After forcing the Broncos for a 3-and-out, Brant Christner would have a long run from Brant Christner, being stopped just short of the endzone. Pete Homan would punch it in from 5 yards out to score the first touchdown.

Late in the third quarter, Keaton Wemhoff would step in front of an Amherst pass and put Kearney Catholic deep in Amherst territory. Homan would add his second touchdown quickly into the start of the fourth quarter.

Kearney Catholic improved to 4-1, and will host 5-0 Hastings St. Cecilia next week. The Bluehawks defeated GICC, 27-14. Read the recap and Bluehawks Head Coach Clint Head’s comments here.
