KEARNEY — In response to ongoing economic pressures, internal transitions, and a continued decline in traditional giving, the United Way of the Kearney Area—under the leadership of its Board of Directors and Executive Director—has made the strategic decision to implement key organizational restructuring measures focused on increasing long-term efficiency and effectiveness.
Over the past year, the organization has navigated unexpected internal changes, funding reductions, and staffing losses, all within a shifting political and economic climate. After conducting a comprehensive assessment of its structure and operations, United Way of the Kearney Area identified the need to realign its strategy to ensure the sustainability of its mission and continued investment in the Kearney area.
As part of this effort, United Way of the Kearney Area will temporarily pause grants to its partner agencies. For many years, the organization allocated funding partially in advance and relied on annual campaign contributions to fulfill those commitments. However, recent fundraising campaigns have not consistently met projected goals, and reserve funds have been used to cover the shortfall—an approach that can no longer be maintained.
Despite these changes, United Way of the Kearney Area remains deeply committed to serving the community. Over the past six years, the organization has proudly invested nearly $2 million into the community, supporting programs for health, education, and financial stability in the Kearney area.
“Our community’s generosity has always been the foundation of our work,” said Paul Downey, Board President of United Way of the Kearney Area. “These changes are necessary to protect that legacy and position United Way to continue serving our neighbors
well into the future.”
Moving forward, United Way of the Kearney Area will continue to honor all donor-designated contributions and focus on building a stronger, more sustainable model to support local needs.
“This decision was a difficult but necessary decision for the long-term sustainability of the organization,” said Savannah Lyon, Executive Director of United Way of the Kearney Area.
“This restructuring gives us the opportunity to strengthen and refocus on what we do best—connecting people in need with the incredible resources available in the Kearney community. It’s a positive step toward ensuring we can continue making a meaningful
impact for years to come.”
