Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese has resigned, as announced by Governor Jim Pillen today. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg has been appointed to finish his term.
Briese, who previously was a member of the legislature from 2016-2023, was appointed as State Treasurer in 2023 when John Murante resigned.
Spellerberg says that he is “ready and excited to get to work”, and is expected to resign as Fremont’s mayor on Wednesday. He has served as mayor since 2020.
One candidate already has announced her intent to run for the position of State Treasurer. Julie Slama, who served in the unicameral from 2019-2025, announced her candidacy today.
