GRAND ISLAND – The Hall County Veterans Service Office is conducting a food drive in response to reduction in SNAP benefits and the federal shutdown.

Hall County Veterans Service Officer Don Shuda addressed Hall County Commissioners at their Nov. 4 meeting about the project to benefit federal military employees and veterans.

For example, availability of food is affecting National Guard members stationed in Grand Island, Shuda said.

“We’ll collect nonperishable items,” Shuda said. Gift cards will also be accepted, but Shuda does not want people to donate cash.

Items may be delivered to the Hall County Veterans Service Office, which is in the building just south of the Hall County Courthouse on the west side.

“This is just the right thing to do,” Shuda said.

“I think it’s great that Don’s heading this up,” Hall County Commissioner Gary Quandt said. Quandt noted that Hall County has always supported veterans.

Commissioner Pam Lancaster said it could be quite some time before federal employees receive paychecks.
