MINDEN — A Grand Island man has been sentenced to over 100 days in jail for motor vehicle homicide after a fatal crash that took place in Kearney County.
Duniesky Benitez Torres, 35, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, a Class 1 misdemeanor and two counts of violating a stop or yield sign, both are infractions.
Torres pleaded no contest to the motor vehicle homicide charge in exchange for the other charges being dismissed by the court. A no contest plea is neither an admission nor denial of guilt, but the plea is treated the same as a guilty plea.
Judge Michal Mead sentenced Torres to 180 days in jail for the motor vehicle homicide charge with credit for one day already served.
According to the Kearney County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:18 a.m., they received multiple 911 calls related to two vehicle accident with injuries near the intersection of County Road 23 and County Road B.
The drivers of both vehicles were transported to CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with serious injuries.
The affidavit stated that a passenger in Benitez Torres’ vehicle, Salvador De Jesus Alvarado Reyes, 35, of Kearney, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The accident was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol with assistance from the Kearney County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney County Attorney’s Office.
Assistance at the scene was provided by the Wilcox Fire Department, the Hildreth Fire Department, Good Samaritan EMS and the Kearney County Road Department.
